  • Predatory Towing Reform: Since July 2025, Indiana has enforced strict new regulations under House Bill 1390.
    • Vehicle Release: Towing companies must release an impounded vehicle within 24 hours if the owner pays 75% of the invoice and provides a bond for the remaining 25%.
    • Banned Fees: Charges for inspecting a vehicle or retrieving personal property are now prohibited.
    • Complaint Process: Commercial carriers can now file formal complaints about “unreasonable” charges with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office.
  • Local Rate Changes: Cities like West Lafayette have recently passed ordinances setting maximum fees for after-hours vehicle retrieval to prevent excessive storage charges.
  • Winter Response: Towing operators in southern Indiana and the “Tri-State” area (near Princeton) are currently operating under emergency travel advisories following heavy late-January snowfall.

Upcoming Indiana Events (2026)

  • Work Truck Week 2026: March 10–13, 2026, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. This is North America’s largest work truck event, featuring new recovery equipment and the Green Truck Summit.
  • ITWA Leadership Change: As of January 1, 2026, Bill McClannahan has taken over as the new President and  of the Indiana Towing & Wrecker Association (ITWA). Sue Miles is the new Executive Director.

Safety Alerts

  • Expanded Move Over Law: Indiana law now requires drivers to move over or slow down for all stationary vehicles with flashing lights, including disabled passenger cars. Failure to comply is a Class B infraction with fines up to $1,000.
